How we determine a baby’s gender with an ultrasound

For more than 30 years, ultrasound technology has given expectant parents a glimpse inside the womb, helping confirm pregnancy viability and, later in pregnancy, determine whether they are expecting a boy or a girl.

At A New Conception Ultrasound Studio, clients often ask whether gender determination is more accurate with 3D or HD ultrasound than with traditional 2D ultrasound. For a trained sonographer, gender determination is typically easier to assess in 2D because the image allows us to evaluate the relevant anatomy without the added surface detail seen in 3D or HD imaging.

Clients may feel more confident when viewing a 3D gender image because the three-dimensional perspective can be easier to understand visually. However, because our team is trained to interpret 2D ultrasound imaging, we first assess gender in 2D. When the baby is in an optimal position, we may also provide a 3D image as an additional keepsake view.

A female gender image in 2D may be described as 3 echogenic lines that define the labia, while a male gender shot resembles a “turtle” with the roundness of the testes being visible as well as the tip of the penis. Below are 2D gender shots of both a boy and a girl in the womb at 14 weeks gestation.

A clear view of the baby’s gender can sometimes be limited by the baby’s position, the position of the legs, or the location of the umbilical cord. In some cases, the umbilical cord may be positioned between the baby’s legs, making it difficult or impossible to obtain an accurate gender view during that visit.

Maternal BMI may also affect image clarity during an abdominal ultrasound. Repositioning the mother can sometimes encourage the baby to move, allowing for a better view. However, some babies may remain cross-legged or in a position that does not allow for an accurate assessment.

Most expectant families are able to find out whether they are having a boy or a girl during their first visit, provided they are at least 14 weeks along and the baby is in an optimal position. In some cases, a repeat visit may be needed if the baby’s positioning prevents a clear view.

A New Conception Ultrasound offers a free redo policy if we are unable to determine your baby’s gender during your appointment.
